Yesterday, one of the top bands of the '80's and early '90's, R.E.M., announced that after 3 decades, they were splitting up. Lead singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry formed R.E.M. in 1980. Hailing from Athens, Georgia, R.E.M., with their alternative rock sound started out enjoying success among college and underground audiences. However, in 1987 the band turned the heads of mainstream pop audiences with their hit single "The One I Love." A year later they signed on with Warner Bros. Records. Soon instead college campuses, R.E.M. was playing at sold out arenas'.
